Art Exhibition - June 2025

  • Cary Arts Center 101 Dry Avenue Cary, NC, 27511 United States (map)

Last June, our community gathered at the Cary Arts Center for an afternoon of art, music, and words held in loving memory of Staff Sergeant Joe Souders, USMC. What began as an open invitation to create became a room full of color and connection—paintings, drawings, photography, wood sculpture, hand-painted models, custom apparel, and poetry, each piece offered as a form of healing and remembrance.

About 60 people joined us throughout the day, and around 40 stayed for the presentation. Among them were Joe’s widow and their three children, who felt the love and support of old friends and complete strangers alike. Several Marines who served alongside Joe made the journey to be there — one flew in from Tennessee, two drove down from DC, and two more came from the coast. For our host, Caleb, it was a reunion 15 years in the making.

The exhibition also gave our artists a place to share their own creations and the journeys behind them. At the heart of the room stood a memorial to Joe—his portrait in dress blues, his uniform, and a slideshow celebrating his life.

What moved us most was how much the day meant to those who came, and how many left excited for what comes next. We believe we started something truly special last year, and we can’t wait to watch it grow.

We owe thanks and gratitude to the Cary Arts Center for hosting us and to the Travis Manion Foundation for their partnership and support. We would be lost without all of our friends and family who volunteered their time and hearts to help bring this day to life—along with every artist who shared their work, thank you. We could not have done it without you. Together, we were reminded that we are not alone, we are not burdens, and we long to be understood.
